Jason Boden's Design Briefs

In the future, when I have time to convert some of my design briefs to web page format, I will make them available here for downloading. In the meantime, here is one that I've finished:

Electric Race Cars

Context

One hundred and ten feet of molten mayhem, ear splitting monster motors , sub eight second scale E.T's. 18 volts of electro shock therapy. Tire shredding, torque feasting tranny twisting burnouts. All the top runners are gonna be there! You could have a three speed floss o matic, monster inch, speed specific power plant or maybe an aluminum big block, alcohol drinking, nitrous guzzling, king of the road Loctite sponsored rail dragster.

The school halls will never be the same!

Bring your knee braces cause there's no room for the faint of heart.

We're turning our hallways into one big burn out box.

Free admission, starts at 12 PM, three weeks from today!

Sponsored by Loctite, Mopac Performance, Crane Cams, TCI Transmissions, IWE Rear Ends Only.

Brought to you by 99.3, The Fox.

Tickets available at all ticketmaster outlets.

Free photos with drivers for your younger brothers and sisters.

A Farm Team production.

Problem

Create an electric dragster to go 110 feet down the hall.

Design Constraints

Only legal power plant is a Radio Shack 9 - 18 VDC motor

Power supply can be up to two 9 vdc, Duracell Batteries.

Scale is 1:12, ie one inch equals one foot

Strip is one twelfth quarter mile; 110 feet.

First one across the finish line wins.

Must cost less than $8.00 per car

Design Considerations

Power transmission systems

Gear and wheel ratios

Wheels and axles, including bearing design

Chassis design, in metal, plastic, or wood.

Wiring and setup of the motor and batteries

Sequence

Think about and sketch your overall ideas

Find the appropriate material

Check your design with the teacher

Form necessary pieces and assemble dragster

Test car and make any necessary modifications

Race car

Management Issues

End of day 1 or 2: Approval of sketches

End of week 1: Finish final design and gather necessary materials

End of week 2: Complete dragster

End of week 3: Test and modify dragster. Prepare for race.
